Remember how Rose’s wizard novel had something to do with the Complacency’s pupils - who had apparently been very sweet children - going evil and laying some place to waste? (Or, you know, that’s what I managed to decipher from the flowery prose…)

Well, Hussie already said in a formspring answer (was it? I think so!) that the novel was like a memory of the creation of the universe which Rose was filtering through her wizard kink or something. And everyone pretty much assumed the pupils represented the trolls (all the more when Horrorstuck happened).

But WHAT IF

WHAT IF those kids who used to be sweet and then went trigger-happy with their powers were the pre-scratch troll players?

What if their session had to be scratched because these kids raised in hippie peace went completely off the fucking deep end while playing this violent, brain-twisting game?

What if a subconscious memory of their experiences remained for all trolls post-scratch and that was why some of them were so bug-fuck twisted? LIKE THE CONDESCE. Seriously, having a Horrorterror for a lusus doesn’t justify the shit she came up with. Same for the Grand Highblood. Only the Sufferer had vivid visual memories of his other life, but that doesn’t mean the others weren’t subconsciously affected somehow.

And there’s another possibility - WHAT IF their post-scratch lives ALSO affected their pre-scratch self? MORE WEIRD TIME SHIT. Like a Memory Double Moebius Reacharound! Post-Scratch Grand Highblood’s… himself-ness affected his pre-scratch personality (and hypothetical breakdown), which in turn affected his post-scratch personality, in this feedback loop of painting walls with blood.

WHAT I MEAN IS

What if John Egbert hates Betty Crocker products because he has subconscious memories of his life as John Crocker, adopted son of a terrifying inhuman alien invader masquerading as the founder of a wholesome and family-friendly commercial bakery goods empire? Even though, from his own personal timeline, being John Crocker is a thing that takes place AFTER his life as John Egbert. And the same goes for, well, pretty much every other character we have been introduced to so far?

It would explain so much.

Also the headcanon that the Pre-Scratch trolls failed because they were physically weak and untrained never sat well with me. The human kids were also raised in fairly peaceful surroundings and with the exception of Dave, perhaps also Jade, were not trained for fighting. All Doc Scratch ever said on the matter was that they were unprepared. I’d much rather believe that, upon entering the Medium, half of them mentally unraveled and it initiated a Horrorstuck style Civil War much like what Vriska described to John as the way true trolls, without Karkat breathing down their necks, would have played the game: killing each other left and right. Except only one of them ever reached his Quest Bed.

When their Hero of Space struck the bargain with Echidna, it was probably a desperate gambit from the only sane ones left alive. They probably also bargained for a group which wouldn’t turn on each other during the course of the game. Which, as we all know, was exactly what they got - when Horrorstuck happened, the game was already technically finished…
